Voice over IP is a general term for solutions that carry voice data over the IP based network connection thus allowing you to place call without blocking your existing phone lines. Any IP based connection to the Internet will suffice provided it is fast enough - good examples would be ADSL broadband, cable broadband and leased/dedicated lines.

The major benefit of using VoIP solution is its cost - calling between two computers is free and calls placed to landlines whether local, long distance or abroad cost a fraction of the normal cost. You can also call mobile numbers and save money but the prices are mainly dictated by the network operators and the savings are not as significant as in the case of a call to a landline.

There are several ways of introducing VoIP solution into your business. One of them is installation on your computers a VoIP software and equipping them with compatible headsets/handsets. Another way is to use a dedicated hardware that will seamlessly integrate with your existing telephone system.
